Adding the perfect scents to your home
Great scents in the home is a must, whether you live in a tiny micro-studio or a penthouse suite. Still, odours – both good and bad – do seem to be more potent when trapped within a small space, as they can embed themselves into everything from your rugs to the furniture.
Take your pick from an array of essential oils, candles and diffusers to keep your living space smelling sweet. Whether you’re a lover of floral scents or prefer herbal aromatherapy, here are some great scents to fill your home with.
Essential oils are as pure as it gets in the scent department. You can add them to a diffuser, but one of the most effective ways to use essential oils is when cleaning. Mix several drops of your favourite essential oil (lavender, lemon and eucalyptus are all winners) with some baking soda, sprinkle onto your rugs and/or carpet, and let it sit about an hour before vacuuming it up.
It doesn’t get much more chic than lighting some luxury candles, filling your home with an amber glow, and basking in the perfume. Diptyque candles have a cult following, and for good reason – if you haven’t smelled the “Baies” candle before, you’re missing out! But even if luxury candles are a bit out of your price point, there’s plenty of yummy-smelling alternatives out there. Try the three-wick “Fireside” candle from Bath & Body Works’ winter line for a warm and seductive scent.
For a low-maintenance approach to a beautifully scented home, use a diffuser. Traditional styles using oil-soaked reeds displayed in a jar work well (Jo Malone makes some wonderful options), or shop around for a more modern version to compliment your home decor. Some diffusers, such as the one below, even work overtime as a humidifier and nightlight, turning your home into a peaceful oasis.
